A residential renovation project, the existing condition was a two-level penthouse atop a contemporary residential tower on the Port Melbourne shoreline. Molecule’s brief from our design-literate, culture-loving clients was to remodel and reimagine the entire apartment, providing a unique and functional home to accommodate both everyday life and large-scale entertaining.
The first design challenge was the confused geometry of the existing floor plan and the awkward dialogue between interior spaces and curvilinear building façade; the solution was to rationalise the layout, clarifying circulation paths and composing spaces as an unfolding series of discoveries, including the city-facing study and immersive, Fornasetti-papered powder room.
The second design challenge was to transform the almost lunar atmosphere of the generic white-on-white apartment into an atmosphere that is distinctive, domestic and urbane; the solution was to introduce a sophisticated palette of matte textures, chalky greys and inky charcoals to anchor the interior against the limitless sky viewed through full-height glazing. A rhythmical wall cladding now snakes throughout the living spaces, providing softness and detail while establishing a datum that speaks to the ocean horizon beyond.
