MINI MORE TERRACE

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Mini More Terrace is a modest interior renovation project that exemplifies how careful interventions can yield profound impacts, allowing the home's timeless spirit to endure for years to come.

The clients’ brief was to renovate the rear of the house, within the existing building footprint – taking the existing kitchen, bathroom and laundry spaces and update them to suit the needs of the young family of five. The terrace had been held within the same family for two decades and it was ripe for renovation.

The circulation diagram of the existing house required diagonal movement through the living room and kitchen to access the bathroom via a semi-external porch. A new arched opening in the living room extends the corridor axis to provide a direct connection to the rear courtyard via new steel framed glass doors.

The new bathroom, laundry and kitchen tower is treated as a joinery insertion within the space. The grey laminate panels are differentiated from the white painted brick exterior walls and new timber lined ceiling. The conceptual approach was to retain and highlight the heritage fabric of the Victorian terrace. Existing brick is painted but not bagged, celebrating the texture and imperfections of the material.

A grid motif repeats through the interior at different scales. The new terrazzo tiled checkerboard patterned floor speaks to the existing vinyl flooring of the original kitchen. The mosaic wall tiles and wired safety glass layer the grids at a fine scale.

The project is an example of retention, re-use and adaptation within small footprint living being inherently sustainable. Heritage fabric is retained, and most importantly, the family’s connection to the house and their community.
